User Management
User Segmentation

User segmentation on a Learning Management System (LMS) is the process of dividing users into groups based on certain characteristics, such as their job role, learning needs, performance, location, language, or other relevant criteria.
By segmenting users on an LMS, administrators can create targeted learning experiences that are tailored to the specific needs and preferences of each group. Learning data and progress can then also be tracked and analyzed for each group, enabling administrators to identify any issues or gaps in training. This, in turn, underlies data-driven decisions to improve the overall learning experience and increase the effectiveness of training and development initiatives – leading to improved job performance, increased retention, and higher productivity.
User Segmentation Capabilities
There are several important user segmentation capabilities that a corporate LMS should have to effectively segment users and help companies to provide a more effective and targeted learning experience for their employees.
Customizable user attributes:
The LMS should allow administrators to create custom user attributes to segment learners based on job roles, departments, skills, location, and other relevant criteria. An LMS administrator can then create different learning paths for employees in the different segments, each with their own set of courses and modules specific to their job roles.
In a company with several departments, including Sales, Marketing, and Customer Service, for example, each department will have different training needs. To segment the users based on their department, you could create a custom user profile field called “Department” and assign values for each department. Once you’ve created the custom user attribute, you can use it to create personalized learning experiences for each department.
Automated user enrollment:
The LMS should automatically enroll users into the appropriate learning paths or courses based on their segmentation criteria. An LMS administrator can then automate the enrolment process to ensure that each user is automatically enrolled in the appropriate courses.
Following on the example above, once you have segmented into their different departments, you could set up automated user enrolment rules based on which department users work in. For example, you could create an enrolment rule that automatically enrolls any user from the “Sales” department in a set of courses on sales techniques, product knowledge, and customer relationship management.
In this way, you can ensure that each user is automatically enrolled in the appropriate courses without requiring manual intervention. This can save time and reduce the risk of errors or oversights.
User analytics and reporting:
The LMS should provide detailed analytics and reporting on user progress, performance, and engagement, allowing administrators to track the effectiveness of their training strategies for different user segments.
We have already established that each of the different departments in our example will have unique training needs, and administrators will want to use reporting and analytics to track each department’s progress and engagement with their training.
For example, you could use a dashboard to display metrics for each department, such as completion rates, assessment scores, and time spent on training. You could also use data visualization tools to create charts and graphs that highlight trends and patterns across different departments. In this way, you can identify areas where each department may need additional support or resources and create targeted training interventions to improve their performance and engagement.

Overall, user segmentation capabilities on an LMS allows companies to create personalized learning experiences, improve administrative and user management efficiency, and make informed decisions to increase the overall effectiveness of the training – leading to improved employee performance, retention, and overall productivity.
